Reputed
as the Venice of the East, Udaipur offers a welcome respite from the
otherwise barren land of Rajasthan. From lakes in midst of the sandy terrain
to green forested hills, the city offers many surprises that will leave you
mesmerized. Its narrow and colorful streets, lines with shops offering a
variety of items, make it an intriguing city.
Lake Pichola, Udaipur
Surrounded by hills, palaces, embankments and bathing ghats, the beautiful
lake derives its name from the Pichali village. There are two island palaces
including Jag Niwas and Jag Mandir that display the best of Rajput
architecture. Jag Niwas, the summer residence of the princes of Mewar, is
today a magnificent luxury hotel. Jag Mandir, the other island palace, with
a marble dome, is a marvel in red sandstone
Pratap Memorial, Udaipur
The splendid monument is homage to Rana Pratap and his faithful warriors.
There is also a Japanese rock garden in the vicinity that attracts tourists
from every nook and corner of the world. Pratap Memorial also offers various
other palaces of interest including Sajjan Garh, Gulab Bagh, Dudh Talai Park
and the Sunset point.
Sahelion-ki-Bari (The Garden of Maids-of-honor), Udaipur
Located on the shores of Fateh Sagar Lake, the splendid garden was built
for the 48 young girls waiting to be sent to the royal house as part of
dowry. Extensive lawns, fountains and shady walking lanes make it a special
place to explore. In addition to this, there are four large pools with
dainty kiosks and fountains with elephant trunks for spouts.
City Palace, Udaipur
Located on a hill, the white royal building of City Palace is surrounded by
crenellated walls that make it totally invincible. The 'Bara Pol' or the
'great gate' leads to the first court, which joins Tripolia or the 'triple
gate'. Between the two gates are eight carved 'toranas' or arches, which
mark the spot where the rulers were weighed against gold or silver. The
palace also houses several exquisitely carved courtyards, overlapping
pavilions, terraces, corridors and hanging gardens.
